        ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Thursday released running back Willis McGahee, it was announced.

        “It’s never easy to part ways with a veteran player who made so many positive contributions to our team and community,” Broncos Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway said. “I appreciate all of the competitiveness, toughness and leadership Willis brought to the Broncos. He was an integral part of our team’s turnaround during the past two seasons, and I wish him the best as he continues his NFL career.”

        McGahee (6-0, 235 pounds) is an 11th-year veteran who spent the last two seasons with Denver, totaling 1,930 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 416 carries (4.6 avg.) in 25 regular-season games played (23 starts). A two-time Pro Bowl selection, McGahee spent his first eight NFL seasons with Buffalo (2003-06) and Baltimore (2007-10).

        In 130 career regular-season games (89 starts), he owns 8,097 rushing yards and 63 touchdowns on 1,957 carries (4.1 avg.) in addition to 202 receptions for 1,319 yards (6.5 avg.) with five scores. In nine career postseason games played (3 starts), he has amassed 111 attempts for 408 yards (3.7 avg.) with five touchdowns along with 10 catches for 70 yards (7.0 avg.).

        Drafted by the Bills in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft from the University of Miami, McGahee capped his collegiate career by breaking the Hurricanes’ single-season records with 1,753 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2002 to earn consensus first-team All-America honors in addition to being named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

        A graduate of Central High School in Miami, McGahee was born on Oct. 21, 1981.
