Clay Aiken announced on Wednesday that he’s running for Congress in North Carolina.
The former “American Idol” finalist, who’s seeking the Democratic nomination, is seeking to unseat two-term Republican Renee Ellmers in the state’s 2nd Congressional district.
In a video posted to his Facebook page, Aiken cited his success in music and how he worked as a special education teacher and on behalf of UNICEF.
The singer also attacked the incumbent’s record, noting she voted for military cuts and contributed to the government shutdown.
“This is what’s wrong with Washington, that a Congresswoman would go there and vote against the best interests on North Carolina military families, and those that depend on the military for their job.”
“I’m not a politician. I don’t ever want to be one,” said Aiken who was appointed by President Bush to a committee for children with special needs.
He simply wants to go to the Capitol to “represent all the people.”
